On December 8 2008, active and retired UAW members from across the U.S. traveled to Washington D.C. to put a human face on the real issues underlying the future of the domestic auto industry, manufacturing, and the American working family. The workers marched to the Rayburn House Office Building and held a press conference to voice their support for Single-Payer Bill H.R. 676, the critical role American manufacturing must play in any serious attempt to address climate change, and the urgent need for Congress to provide the industry aid to protect people, production, and the planet.
In this segment, Frank Hammer, Wendy Thompson, Tony Browning & Bill Alford field questions from reporters. Then Ron Lare discusses how the deterioration of wages, benefits, and quality manufacturing jobs may undermine our ability to attract workers willing to build the sustainable products our planet needs.
